A high score can show steady, safe driving. A low score can point to risk. What is driver scoring?

Driver scoring is a way of turning driver behavior data into a clear, easy-to-understand performance score. Instead of asking fleet managers to review every speeding event, harsh brake, sharp corner, or idling incident one by one, driver scoring gives them a quicker view of how safely and consistently a driver performed during a trip or over a selected period.

To implement an effective driver coaching program, managers also need the context behind the score: the trip details, the behavior patterns, the driver involved, and whether performance is even changing over time.

That’s why, on the 3Dtracking platform, we make sure driver scoring works alongside other tools. Now it’s easier to give your clients a more complete view of driver performance.

  • Trip-by-trip visibility: Review how a driver performed on each journey.

  • Driver rankings: See top and bottom performers to identify who should be recognized or coached. On the 3Dtracking platform, driver performance can be shown using a simple red, amber, and green rating system. The rating is based on the number of penalty points a driver has incurred during a trip. Each client can define their own point ranges for good, moderate, or poor driving, so it’s easier to assess driver performance according to their own operational standards.

  • KPI reports: Track driver or vehicle performance over a selected period to see whether behavior is improving. It’s also possible to assign different KPI profiles to different vehicle types. This makes performance comparisons more accurate, as mining vehicles can be measured against other mining vehicles, while road fleet vehicles can be measured against vehicles with similar operating conditions.

  • Driver-to-vehicle allocation: Link events to the correct driver when managers assign drivers to vehicles through our mobile fleet management app or platform.

  • Vehicle integrations: Newer vehicles can connect through wireless devices, sensors, or CAN bus, while older vehicles are supported using retrofitted sensors.

How is a driver score calculated?

  1. A trip starts with a maximum possible score. As risky or inefficient driving events happen, points are deducted. These events can include speeding, harsh braking, harsh acceleration, sharp cornering, excessive idling, or other behavior rules configured for the fleet. On the 3Dtracking platform, we can configure the rules that matter specifically for your client’s operations.

  2. At the end of the trip, the driver receives a score, usually shown as a percentage or star rating. A clean trip may score 100%, while a trip with multiple events will receive a lower score.

  3. Fleet managers can then open the trip to see which incidents affected the result.

Example of driver scoring in the real world

Picture this: a courier company has 40 vehicles doing city deliveries every day. One driver, Thabo, completes 18 trips in a week. His overall driver score drops from 92% to 74%.

When the fleet manager opens the trip data in the 3Dtracking platform, they can see why:

Driving event What happened
Speeding 6 events, mostly on the same main road, between deliveries
Harsh braking 9 events, several near school zones and intersections
Excessive idling 42 minutes across customer stops
Sharp cornering 3 events on urban routes

Instead of saying, “You’re driving badly,” the manager can say:

“Your score dropped this week because of repeated speeding and harsh braking on the same delivery route. Let’s look at whether the route timing is too tight, whether traffic is causing pressure, or whether we need to work on following distance.”

They then agree on a goal: reduce speeding and harsh braking events on that route over the next two weeks.

Two weeks later, the manager checks the 3Dtracking KPI report. Thabo’s score has improved to 86%.

What are the benefits of driver scoring?

Driver scoring data helps fleet managers understand the driving habits behind each score. A low score may point to repeated speeding, excessive idling, or other risky driving events. A higher score usually indicates smoother, safer, and more consistent driving.

Scoring also makes driver conversations fairer. Instead of giving vague feedback, managers can point to specific trips and patterns and rely on data to initiate positive change.
